The Australian Greens will today vote against federal legislation backing up Campbell Newman's draconian G20 laws, Senator Penny Wright and Greens Deputy Leader Adam Bandt MP have announced.
Senator Wright, Australian Greens spokesperson for Legal Affairs, said the Queensland laws were a gross breach of human rights.
"Campbell Newman's G20 laws take away basic freedoms for thousands of Brisbane residents - even allowing people to be excluded from their own homes or businesses," Senator Wright said.
"The G20 summit should be a chance to showcase our proud democratic tradition to the world - despotic laws like this have no place.
"The Australian Greens want nothing to do with supporting Campbell Newman in his agenda to tear away human rights."
Greens deputy leader Adam Bandt MP said he would oppose the G20 (Safety and Security) Complementary Bill 2014 when it was debated in the house today.
"This bill will reinforce Campbell Newman's civil rights free zone during the G20", Mr Bandt said.
"Legitimate security concerns have been trumped by a legal overreach designed to stifle alternative views. Why should large banners expressing a differing point of view to Tony Abbott be banned during the G20, for example?"
"The government should go back to the drawing board and ensure civil rights, including the right to protest, are not supressed during the G20."
